Please be ready for a Chapter 15 Religion Quiz on Thursday, May 6th. Student Council Speeches and Election will also be held on this day after lunch. Good luck to all candidates! Progress Reports will be handed out at the end of the day.

Power Outage

Early this morning (April 29th) the school lost all electrical power. The school schedule will not be affected. However, if you do need to contact the school please be aware that until power is restored we are unable to answer the phones.

Happy Easter to Our School Community

This is Holy Week. The solemn observance of Holy Week began on Palm Sunday. Each day of Holy Week afford us time to reflect on the events that led up to the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The night before Christ died, he gathered his friends together to celebrate the Jewish feast of Passover. Our seventh grade class will prepared a beautiful Last Supper prayer service for our school community on the last day of school before our Easter break. These students will portray Christ and his apostles as he washed their feet of and shared his last meal with them. During that Last Supper Jesus changed the bread and wine into his body and blood. He also ordained the apostles as his first priests.

The solemn remembrance of Christ’s crucifixion and death on Calvary takes place during the Good Friday liturgy. This special Liturgy is not a Mass. It is a three–part service: the Liturgy of the Word, Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. All are invited to participate in this liturgy in our church at 1:30 p.m. on Good Friday.

On Holy Saturday evening the Church celebrates the Easter Vigil. The liturgy begins with the Service of Light, which is the blessing of the new fire and the lighting of the Paschal, or Easter Candle. The new baptismal water is also blessed. Those who have been preparing for baptism are baptized at this Mass which will begin at 7:30 a.m. in our church. Catholic Women’s Guild to Sponsor School Fundraisers at Chili’s in the Downey Landing

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Women’s Guild invites everyone to dinner at Chili’s Restaurant in Downey Landing on Wednesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 22, to participate in a fundraiser for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School. The event runs ALL DAY from 11 AM to 11 PM and includes lunch, dinner and take out (562-803-9151)! Chili’s will donate 15% of all proceeds from meals ordered to OLPH School. If you cannot make it one day, please try to go on the other day available. Grab some friends and meet at Chili’s for lunch on Wednesday. Go back to Chili’s for dinner the following day. Be sure to pick up a flyer in the school office and take it with you. If you do not have a flyer, just mention “OLPH Night” to the waiter when they take your order and Chili’s will donate 15% to the school. Let Chili’s do the cooking, have fun and help . OLPH School’s Technology Department!

Evacuation Earthquake drill on Friday May 7th

In light of all of the recent earthquakes locally and on the global scale, OLPH has scheduled an evacuation earthquake drill on Friday May 7th. On this day students will evacuate the building and assemble on the field. Students will be dismissed to their parents or designated adult from the field on that day. Now is the time to update your emergency cards as students will be dismissed only to those persons you have designated for this purpose. Please come to the school office if you need to update your child’s emergency information. Watch this newsletter for more information on our upcoming drill.

Olympic-a-thon News

Last week our students brought in over $8,938. This is one of our two major fundraisers for the year. All families receive 100 % fundraising credit for cash donations made to this event. Fundraising credit can be used to fulfill this year’s $500 obligation. See this newsletter for information.

Olympic A Thon reminders: Wednesday April 14th will be the last collection day

All students are asked to wear their Olympic A Thon shirts (with uniform bottoms) on the Wednesday before the event

Parents can earn service hours for this year by assisting with the Olympic A Thon

Remember—Funds from this event go towards the school’s operating expenses( utilities, supplies, land and building purchases, repair and maintenance, insurance, equipment purchases, repair and maintenance, etc)

We congratulate Kindergarten— our top fundraisers for the week and grades 2, 5, both 6 grades and 8th grades for most participation. These classes will have Non Uniform dress on Thursday April 15th!

Date Corrections

I apologize for the incorrect dates that appeared in the previous post. We will come back to school on Monday, April 12th, 2010, not April 10th, 2010. See you then.

Our field trip will still be in April, however instead of the 20th, it will be on Wednesday, April 28th. We will have our cookie baking for the needy on skid row on Tuesday, April 20th as the schedule reads, and take our trip the following week(4/28/10).

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you very much for your cooperation and enjoy your Easter. Happy Spring Break!

Happy Holy Week

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

I hope you all have a very blessed Holy Week. Fr. Mark reminded us at our school mass that we are celebrating the Tridium this week, which includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and The Easter Vigil. He invites all families to participate in Holy Week and compared our Holy Week as Catholics to that of NFL’s Super Bowl. It is the biggest event of the year for us.

Tomorrow is a half-day with a word service. The 7th grade class will act out the Last Supper for all of us. Tomorrow will be DRESS UNIFORM for all students. Wednesday, March 31, 2010 is Caesar Chavez Day, and in second grade we have honored him by writing a report on his life and we are trying to be more like him by incorporating more service into our lives, as well as working towards justice. Wednesday also kicks off our Spring Break. We will see everyone back in school on April 10th, 2010.

When we return from Spring Break, the final donations for Olympicathon are due on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010. On Friday, April 16th, 2010 we will have our Olypmicathon Fun Day at OLPH. On April 20th, which is a Tuesday the second grade will have their field trip to Amy’s Farm. Look for more information on the field trip when we return from spring break.

Thank you to all parents who volunteered their time for our class retreat and all parents who were able to donate yummy snacks, etc. The retreat was a huge success and the children were able to focus on their friendship with Jesus and with each other.
