This year Catholic Schools Week will be held during the week of January 23rd. Our Catholic Schools Week celebration will conclude with our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass and Open House. On Saturday, January 28th This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith, Academics, Service. ” The theme expresses three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. Children learn about faith-not just basic Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. They concentrate on academics, which in Catholic schools are held to the highest standards, so they can reach their highest potential. They practice service-giving time, talent and effort to help others– as an expression of both faith and good citizenship. This combined focus on faith , academics and service prepares students for full and meaningful lives. Watch this newsletter for a list of our Catholic Schools Week Activities or check out our website, www.ourladyschool.com
Next Tuesday evening, January 10th our first grade students and their families will gather in the church at 7 pm for a special liturgy called “The Rite of Enrollment.” This Rite formally acknowledges and welcomes students and their families preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Here at Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, student preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion is a two year process. It has been determined that two consecutive years of Religious Education fosters a deeper faith development and prepares the child for a more complete experience of each sacrament. Please remember that preparing a child for a sacrament includes attending Mass on a weekly basis.
The parish Director of Religious Education, Theresa Nicholas oversees the sacramental program. Please feel free to contact her at 562-862-7268 or olph.reled@yahoo.com if you have any questions about this program.
Show Your Elementary Schooler the Effects of Persistence
posted by Mrs. Davis on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012
It’s wonderful for kids to be talented and smart, but research shows it’s just as important to be persistent. Pushing forward-even when it’s tough-is a key to success. Whether your child is naturally persistent or gives up easily it helps to:
- Break big goals into small parts. If your child is determined to get an A in math, support him by discussing steps. How exactly will he reach his goal? Help him develop a reasonable plan.
- Enjoy the process. Sure it feels great to see an A on a report card, but it also feels great to study hard and do well on a test, quiz or project. Even better, it feels great to learn! Talk with your child about his accomplishments and what makes them worth while.
- Discuss persistence. How has persistence already helped your child? Maybe he learned to ride a bike or play an instrument. What new challenge can he tackle now?
- Compliment your child’s hard work-not just the end results. If he falls short of a goal, that’s ok, as long as he tried.

The angel said to them “Do not be afraid; I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
