In second grade “church homework” is assigned weekly to encourage students to attend church and listen to God’s word. This weekend will be the first weekend the homework is assigned. Our field trip will still be in April, however instead of the 20th, it will be on Wednesday, April 28th. We will have our cookie baking for the needy on skid row on Tuesday, April 20th as the schedule reads, and take our trip the following week(4/28/10).

I hope you all have a very blessed Holy Week. Fr. Mark reminded us at our school mass that we are celebrating the Tridium this week, which includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and The Easter Vigil. He invites all families to participate in Holy Week and compared our Holy Week as Catholics to that of NFL’s Super Bowl. It is the biggest event of the year for us.

Tomorrow is a half-day with a word service. The 7th grade class will act out the Last Supper for all of us. Tomorrow will be DRESS UNIFORM for all students. Wednesday, March 31, 2010 is Caesar Chavez Day, and in second grade we have honored him by writing a report on his life and we are trying to be more like him by incorporating more service into our lives, as well as working towards justice. Wednesday also kicks off our Spring Break. We will see everyone back in school on April 10th, 2010.

When we return from Spring Break, the final donations for Olympicathon are due on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010. On Friday, April 16th, 2010 we will have our Olypmicathon Fun Day at OLPH. On April 20th, which is a Tuesday the second grade will have their field trip to Amy’s Farm. Look for more information on the field trip when we return from spring break.

Thank you to all parents who volunteered their time for our class retreat and all parents who were able to donate yummy snacks, etc. The retreat was a huge success and the children were able to focus on their friendship with Jesus and with each other.

Happy Spring! The days of Lent are moving so quickly as we prepare for Easter. We have been very busy in grade 2. This week we will finish up chapter 6 in math and have our chapter 6 test. We are wrapping up our unit on People at Work in social studies as well. This week we will focus on how people save money and what happens to our food before we see it at the market. We will have our own assembly line in grade two! We are continuing to learn about pronouns in language, and this week we will focus on pronouns for more than one. This week will be a review week for spelling, so be sure to be on the look out for the review packet. The words will be chosen from our new story. We will begin reading Charlotte’s Web this week! In religion we continue to prepare for our Sacrament of Communion and learn about Jesus’ life. Paper packets go out this week as well.

Don’t forget to have your child wear his/her Olympicathon shirt this Wednesday and turn in their Olympicathon envelope. This Thursday second grade has earned free dress for “most participation”. Keep up the great work. We also learned last week that second grade has raised the most money so far. Thank you for supporting OLPH!

Please sign and return your child’s report card by tomorrow, Tuesday, March 23, 2010. This Friday , March 26, 2010 will be our class retreat and we will focus on the theme of friendship. On Saturday OLPH students are invited to join together and participate in the ARC Walk for Independence. Please come to support our friends living with intellectual disabilities and show them how fantastic they are. Our student council will be there and other faculty/staff/students as well. See you there!

Can you believe it is March already? Time is moving so fast. On Friday we concluded our chapter in math on telling time and we will be moving onto place value with 100’s. We are becoming fluent readers and experts on looking up vocabulary words in the dictionary. We enjoyed learning about our past and present government leaders during the month of February too. We also learned about the Olympics and how everyone sets goals, and works towards them.

This Saturday will be your student’s First Communion interview. Please be sure that your child’s Eucharist book is complete. The interviews will begin at 9:00am, but it is recommended that you arrive earlier. The earlier you arrive, the sooner you will complete your interview and be able to select your communion date.
