The children have been working hard in their reading groups and have been enjoying their increasing independence and fluency as readers.  We continue to work on phonics, sight words, story comprehension, and decoding skills. When reading at home, children should continue to listen to stories, read together with a grown up, and read independently. I cannot stress the importance of reading daily at this age. Please continue to monitor your child’s reading. To help me, please help your child fill out their reading log. This is a way for me to assess how much reading is taking place in the home, and it does affect their grade as well. Thank you for doing such a great job!

In second grade, one of our standards is learning how to write a friendly letter. We have been corresponding with our pen pals, who are also in second grade. Our pen pals attend a School in Los Angeles. We try to write two paragraphs to our pen pals each time. In the first paragraph we write about ourselves, and answer the questions that our pen pals wrote to us. In the second paragraph we ask our pen pals different questions.

We have two new “students” in our class now. Actually, all of the second graders have met their goal of 200 marbles, thus earning two class fish! We will have a naming ceremony soon. We also talked about what our own name means and why we have the name we do!
